Answer:

The correct answer is B. The United States did not complain about the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 because it protected West Berlin from any attempts of the Soviet Union to conquer it.

Explanation:

The American reaction to the construction of the wall was slow: 20 hours passed until the appearance of the military forces on the border; 40 hours until they communicated with the Soviet commander of Berlin; and 72 hours until they protested at Moscow's diplomacy. There were more and more rumors that the Soviets had assured the Western allies that they would not threaten their rights. The experience of the blockade had shown the allies that West Berlin was threatened, so the construction of the wall was a material confirmation of the status quo, that is, the recognition of Western domination of that part of the city. The Soviet Union abandoned its request that West Berlin be "free" of allied troops, which it had formulated in the Khrushchev ultimatum of 1958. In this way, the United States ensured that the Soviet Union would not attack West Berlin.

Why have some African nations taken steps towards democracy in recent years?
sasho [114]
The Movement Toward Democracy in Africa

The workshops were convened against the background of what many observers have called the ''second wave of liberation in Africa.'' Authoritarian regimes are being challenged by individuals and movements in search of more democratic forms of governance. Africans in many countries are showing remarkable persistence in forcing their leaders to comply with popular demands for political pluralism to replace the common one-party regimes. Calls for open and democratic governance, characterized by popular participation, competitive elections, and free flow of information can be heard in many African countries.

This new disposition toward democratization in Africa is a consequence of pressures both internal and external to African societies. To be sure, the continent's declining economic fortunes have made people more skeptical and critical of their governments, with new African thinking prompting individuals to move beyond old taboos. Demands from within African countries are pressing leaders to deliver on the promises of economic growth and prosperity they made in order to encourage the acceptance of structural adjustment policies supported by international financial institutions. The new insistence by external aid donors and creditors on good governance also has provided a window of opportunity for African democrats to push for transparency and accountability in their countries. Likewise, the worldwide democratic revolution and its corresponding summons to protect and promote individual human rights have contributed to generating protests

Why do tens of thousands of sub-Saharan Africans try to cross the Mediterranean each year?
yanalaym [24]
According to different estimates, between 65,000 and 120,000 sub-Saharan Africans enter the Maghreb (Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya) yearly, of which 70 to 80 percent are believed to migrate through Libya and 20 to 30 percent through Algeria and Morocco. Several tens of thousands (not hundreds of thousands, as media coverage might suggest) of sub-Saharan Africans try to cross the Mediterranean each year.
