Now, according to the question, 
x / 3 = y.............................equation (1)
Also,
y + 4 = 8 ...............equation (2)............because it says 4 added to the quotient is 8
y = 8-4
y = 4

Now, substituting the value of y in equation (1), we get,
x / 3 = y
x / 3 = (4)
x = 4 * 3
x = 12

So, the number is 12
