    Yasser Arafat (1929-2004) was president of the Palestinian Authority from 1969 until the day of his death and leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) for a similar period, but left office on October 29, 2004. Arafat He was also the leader of Fatah, an armed struggle movement, founded in 1956. Arafat abandoned his arms in 1982 when he recognized the state of Israel.

    In 1993, he signed a peace agreement with the Israeli government, mediated by then-US President Bill Clinton. In this way, governments pledged to join forces for peace between the two peoples. These agreements provided for the end of the conflicts, the opening of negotiations on the occupied territories, the withdrawal of Israel from southern Lebanon and the question of the status of Jerusalem. The following year, he won the Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli politicians Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin.
