What was the basis of Ghana’s wealth?
erik [133]

The basis of Ghana's wealth was the trade, mainly of gold and salt.

Explanation:

Ghana was a an empire in West Africa, or rather in the western Sahel. Even though it was not a very large empire, it was very wealthy, and it had very big power in the region. There are two main reasons as to why Ghana managed to became powerful and wealthy:

  • excellent location
  • trade

The excellent location, between North Africa and and West Africa, right on the trade routes between the two regions, contributed to Ghana having huge advantage to gain wealth. This was used, and Ghana developed the trade even more between the two regions, and it wisely used its goods.

The two most valuable and most demanded goods from Ghana were the salt and the gold. The salt was popular among all people, and the demand for it was constantly on the rise. The gold was highly valued by the people of the higher hierarchy, and they wanted to have as much as possible from it, and they paid a lot for it. These two, and several other goods, brought enormous wealth to Ghana.
