In a paddock there are emus and wombats. If there are 52 heads and 148 feet, how many emus are in the paddock?

Then x+y=52....................(1)

<span>multiplying equation (1) by 2 </span>
<span>we get </span>
<span>2x +2y = 104............................(3) </span>
<span>subtracting equation(3) from equation (2) </span>
<span>2y=44 </span>
<span>y=22 </span>
<span>that is x=52-22=30 </span>
<span>there are 30 emus and 22 wombats</span>

Emu have 2 feet and 1 head
 wombat has 4 feet and 1 head

E = emu
W = Wombat

E +W = 52
2E +4W = 148

E = 52-W

2(52-W) + 4W = 148
104-2W +4W = 148
104 + 2W = 148
2W = 44
W = 44/2 = 22

E = 52-22 = 30

 there are 30 Emus
