Hiawatha was the leader of the Onondaga tribe and he was responsible for joining five tribes together which formed the Iroquois Confederacy.

a. Hiawatha's gifts to the Five Nations symbolized peace. Hiawatha belts are used in symbolizing peace.

b. Hiawatha wanted the Five Nations to unite so that they could all share the same constitution, live in harmony and that he could become the leader of all the five tribes. Even though the five nations lived separately, they were under the central tribe of Onondaga.

c. Hiawatha was right to encourage unification. This is because it brought about peace and led to the development of the tribes.
