The Plessy v. Fergusones case is a legal decision in the jurisprudence of the United States Supreme Court in which it was decided to maintain the constitutionality of racial segregation even in public places.

The Supreme Court ordered, in Civil Rights Cases (1883), that the Fourteenth Amendment be applied only to government actions and not to those private properties, consequently people were not protected against individual and private entities that violated Your civil rights. In particular, the Court invalidated most of the Civil Rights Act of 1875, a law passed by the United States Congress to protect African Americans from any kind of discrimination.
