Effect of natural selection on phenotypic variation

Biology

Evolution takes place through natural selection, which was observed by Charles Darwin. Natural selection affects he genotypic make-up of the organsims, which basically control their phenotype. Effect of natural selection is different on all traits, and depends upon the organsim as well as environment. The environmental conditions affect the genetic make up and random mutations can occur in them, which might help them in surviving in a particular environment. In this case, only the mutated organisms will be able to thrive and populate further and hence are selected over others.

- How do acidic and alkaline environments affect the growth and survival of bacterial?
MA_775_DIABLO [31]

Answer:

Usually, the catalytic properties of the enzymes are lost and metabolism is halted. Most bacteria grow best around neutral pH values (6.5 - 7.0), but some thrive in very acid conditions and some can even tolerate a pH as low as 1.0. Such acid loving microbes are called acidophiles.

In the space below, write a description of the connection between molecules and traits and reproduction.
blagie [28]

Answer:

A molecule of DNA is made up of two strands which are joined by the hydrogen bonds present in the nucleotide bases. The sugar and phosphate  make up the backbone of the DNA. The sequence of the nucleotide bases determines the traits that an organism will carry.  Genes are hereditary molecules which are made up of sections of DNA. Together, they make up the entire genome for the organism. Each gene is located on a specific place inside the chromosomes. The chromosomes are the element of reproduction as they undergo the process of meiosis and duplicate themselves.

Examine the following scenario to answer the next set of questions. (Hint: I suggest you draw the crosses described in this scen
choli [55]

Answer:

The genotype of the original parents is  pp PP

Explanation:

Let “P” represents the purple color allele of the flower of pea plant

and “p” represents the white color allele of the flower of pea plant

Genotype of  homozygous purple flowered pea plant is represented by "PP"

Genotype of  homozygous white flowered pea plant is represented by "pp"

a) First generation cross between a homozygous purple flowered pea plant and a homozygous white flowered pea plant

P P

p Pp Pp

p Pp Pp

All the offspring are heterozygous purple flowered pea plants

b) In second generation cross is taking place between two heterozygous purple flowered pea plants with genotype "Pp"

P p

P PP Pp

p Pp pp

Out of four offspring , one is white while rest three are purple flowered pea plant.

Hence, the genotype of the original parents is  pp PP
