I know a Moderator has already answered but I would like to offer a second opinion in the way I would do it with the same result.

If it's Mean/Average (same thing in most cases) then all you have to do is divide 40 by 5 giving you 8 feet per second.

Average speed = total distance/total time

Plug 40 feet in for total distance and 5 seconds in for total time. Divide 40 feet by 5 seconds to find the average speed.

average speed = 40 feet/5 seconds

Divide 40 feet and 5 seconds by 5.

average speed = 8 feet/1 second

Your answer is 8 feet per second.
