The gospel also tells us that the Lord chooses unlikely people to be his instruments in promoting salvation, thus the mention of John being called in the wilderness. Repentance is involved in preparation to salvation and the forgiveness of sins would pave the way for it. As what the prophet Isaiah has said, it was just the way how everyone should prepare for the coming of the Lord, the King. We are all to be ready at the coming of our Lord.
