A dwelling is a space of a room, or various rooms, that is intended to be used as private housing. In other words, a dwelling is a house. Humans have been building dwellings since the beginning of our existence, as we needed to be able to protect ourselves and our possessions from the environment and predators.

Dwellings, however, became more advanced with the passage of time. Houses became more complex, and were built with more resistant materials. Some became so elaborate that they are considered to be castles and palaces. Moreover, as humans accumulated more objects, dwellings became more luxurious. Finally, the division of labour created a particular social group that was dedicated to build houses, such as architects and masons.
