La tercera etapa, llamada de la Resistencia, careció de un liderazgo verdadero, manteniéndose vivo el movimiento por los liderazgos locales de varias figuras a los largo del país. Surgen figuras como Vicente Guerrero, Agustín de Iturbide, y Guadalupe Victoria. Hablamos de 1815 a 1820.

Finalmente en la cuarta etapa, llamada de la Consumación de la Independencia, surgió de la mano del General Agustín López de Iturbide, quien logró unir a los ejércitos y crear el famoso Ejército Trigarante, de las Tres Garantías, que hizo su entrada triunfal a la ciudad de México en 1821, consumando la Independencia de México al vencer al ejército español.
