There are several aspects of tragedy that hold true across the entire genre. Aristotle laid out six elements of tragedy: plot, character, thought, diction, song, and spectacle. Plot comes first because it is the most significant aspect of tragedy. All plots in tragedies end up the same way (suffering). However, they are very complex. As for character, the protagonist in tragedies is a tragic hero. They are once great but experience a downfall in the story that results in suffering. Thought refers to the characters' experiences and feelings throughout the story and is expressed through their words and actions. Diction is how the story is told. Spectacle is how the play is presented on stage. Hope this helps.
