I believe that the most fitting answer for this question would be that war is a glorious thing and that it is an honor to die for one's country. This used to be a very common, popular theme in early literature. War heroes were praised and celebrated and it was seen as dishonorable to avoid going to war. Now, the treacheries and destruction of war are seen. Hope this helps.
