In Western Massachusetts and Worcester, there occurred a rebellion known as Shays' Rebellion.
Shays' Rebellion was an armed insurrection in Western Massachusetts and Worcester in protest to the state government's intensified efforts to collect taxes from individuals and their businesses as well as in reaction to a financial problem among the populace. Between 1786 and 1787, the most of the fighting took place in and around Springfield. Daniel Shays, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, led 4000 rebels, sometimes known as Shaysites, in a demonstration against racial and economic inequities. Shays, a farmworker from Massachusetts, joined the Continental Army at the start of the Revolutionary War, participated in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, and Saratoga, and was eventually wounded in battle.
