In contrast, no states south of Pennsylvania abolished slavery. Many of the southern states did go as far as relaxing manumission laws, which removed restrictions on the right of individual owners to free their slaves. Because of these laws, between 1782 and 1790 individual Virginian slave owners freed as many as 10,000 slaves.

A few reasons. It was great for the United States economy because of the great production of sugar and other items there. Also because it was a strategic location for war. The terrain was perfect and it being an island gave them access farther away from the motherland. You can actually still see some of the bunkers and stuff on the volcanoes that they used in the World War!
