Iconography refers to the word used to designate the symbolic meaning of images or shapes represented in works of art. It also names a discipline of Art History, dedicated to identifying, describing, classifying and interpreting the theme of figurative arts. Until the late 16th century, iconography referred especially to the symbolic meaning of images in a religious context. Currently the term refers to the study of the history and significance of any thematic group.
