The number of prisoners held in federal and state prisons, measured in thousands, can be described by the polynomial -2.06x^2 +

77.82x + 743. The variable x represents the number of years since 1990.
A) Estimate the number of prisoners in 1990.

B) According to the polynomial, by how much did the prison population increase from 2002 to 2007?

I tried putting 1990 in brackets where the x is for part A, but I got a negative number because of the -2.06 and it's not the right answer. Can someone please walk me through the steps?

The key thing here is that x is the number of years AFTER 1990, therefore for part A plug in 0 to get 743
For part B plug in 12 and 17 then subtract the smaller from larger.
I got 1470.6 for 2007 and 1380.2 for 2002
Subtracting gives 90.4, which rounds to 90 because .4 of a prisoner doesn't make sense

Final answer:
(A) 743
(B) 90
Hope I helped :)

Using the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Complete the following exercises. Show your work.
svp [43]

Answer:

A) - Quartic polynomial

- has four roots

- roots are; f(x) = (x + 5i)(x - 5i)(x + 2)(x - 2)

B) - Cubic polynomial

- has 3 roots

- roots are; f(x) = (x - 5)²(x + 5)

Step-by-step explanation:

A) f(x) = x⁴ + 21x² − 100

The highest power in this polynomial is 4 and thus, it is called a quartic polynomial. This means that it will have 4 roots.

Factorizing this polynomial gives;

f(x) = (x² + 25)(x² - 4)

Equating to zero, we can find the roots. Thus, the roots are;

x = 5i

x = -5i

x = 2

x = -2

Thus, the completely factorized polynomial is;

f(x) = (x + 5i)(x - 5i)(x + 2)(x - 2)

B) f(x) = x³ − 5x² − 25x + 125

The highest power in this polynomial is 3. It is therefore a cubic polynomial with 3 roots.

Factorizing this polynomial gives;

f(x) = (x² - 25)(x - 5)

Equating to zero and Factorizing gives;

x = 5

x = -5

x = 5

Thus, completely factorized with the roots is;

f(x) = (x - 5)²(x + 5)
