In order to escape the dust bowl a family would have to travel  935.47 miles in west direction from Amarillo, TX to Los Angeles, CA  and 1,073 miles by car, following the I-40 route (aprox. 16 hours). If the family travel by airplane the distance is the same and aprox. 4 hours 45 minutes.
