Why did historic Indians have more permanent settlements than prehistoric Indians?

Agriculture meant Indians had to be sedentary.

To plant food, you must have a long-term commitment to an area to reap the fruit of harvest. If one moves around, they can never plant for food, as they do not stay in the area long enough to reap the benefit.
