In your response, be sure to address all parts of the question. Use complete sentences; an outline or bulleted list alone is not

acceptable.
Use the passage below to answer all parts of the question that follows.

“In the past, none failed to hear Confucius’ teachings, but few understood them. Thereafter came the vulgar Confucian scholarship of later times, which stressed memorization and literary composition, but was of no real use. Then came the deviant doctrines of Buddhism and Daoism, which had loftier goals but lacked solid substance. These teachings were mixed together in great confusion so that rulers could no longer hear the essential teachings of Confucius, and lesser men could no longer enjoy the benefits of good government. Everything decayed until disorder and destruction reached its extreme in the Five Dynasties period*.

Yet Heaven’s cycle continues. The virtuous power of the Song dynasty rose up, and both government and education shone with great luster. With that, the method whereby the ancients taught men was once again made brilliantly clear to the world.”

*an era of political chaos in China during the tenth century

Zhu Xi, Chinese scholar and philosopher, preface to a commentary on The Great Learning, written in 1190. The Great Learning was a text of Confucian teachings that became a foundational text of examination for the Chinese civil service.

a) Identify ONE claim made in the passage.

Answer:

A.) "Then came Buddhism and Daoism, which had loftier goals but lacked solid substance." is a claim as the passage is stating that the two religions didn't have completely planned goals

B.) Due to the infiltration of two new religions into the Chinese populous, more people began to believe different things than what others would have thought. This caused many difficulties in the government because instead of having one religion and everyone believing what that religion says, they were dealing with three religions where people from the different religions would fight in the streets or start trouble.

What was the impact of the sinking of the USS Maine? The Lusitania?
Lera25 [3.4K]

It is consider that both the sinking if the USS Maine and The Lusitania were factors in US entering two different wars (the war between US and Spain and the First World War).

The USS Maine was sunk in 1898 in Cuba. The battleship was near the  Cuban coast while there was a conflict between Spain and Cuban nationalists  fighters. It is believed that a mine was the cause of the explosion of the USS Maine resulting in the death of hundreds of men on board. There was already support in the US for the Cuban nationalist cause and the USS Maine incident galvanized the public opinion against Spain.

The Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine in 1915 near Ireland. The Lusitania was a civilian ship (although it was also carrying military supplies to England) and its sinking had a profound impact on public opinion. It helped the US goverment obtain popular support to declare war on Germany.

Delian League or the Athenian Maritime Alliance was an alliance created between Ionian cities that were located in Asia Minor and the islands in the Aegean Sea. Athens was a leading force in the alliance, and even used the financial advantages of the league to support its own economic needs, especially during the period of Pericles.

Explanation:

Alliance was created to strengthen the role of the Greek city-states that were closely attached to Athens. This alliance participated in a war against Persia. The city-states from this alliance, around 300 of powers relied on maritime trade and were highly developed. Still, most of that money went in the hands of Athens that totally dominated in it. All great projects in Athens were financed from the money that was obtained through the existence of this alliance.
