The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and artistic movement that originated among the African American communities in Harlem, New York. This movement took place in the 1920s, a period of great social and artistic innovation. The Harlem Renaissance led to a rebirth of African American art, fuelled by the artists who were interested in their African legacy and traditions. These artists were generally more interested in fostering musical traditions with an African influence, such as blues, jazz and spirituals, as opposed to developing Modernist music.
