    John Calvin, or Jean Calvin ( 1509 - 1564 ) was French theologian during the Protestant Reformation. He developed the system of Christian theology called Calvinism. He was influenced by the Augustinian and other early Christian traditions. After deadly violence against Protestants in France, Calvin fled to Basel ( Switzerland ). In 1536 he started reforming the church in Geneva.
