Humanists believed people shape their own lives and can achieve great things.

Humanists studied  "Humanities" (the study of life and culture) such as grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry, ethics.

The Church taught that laws were made by God and required people to follow its teachings without question.  It also emphasized life after death as opposed to life on Earth.  Renaissance humanists believed that people should question everything, and tried to balance religious faith with an active interest in human existence.
