"Suddenly Bilbo understood. Forgetting all danger he stood on the ledge and hailed the dwarves, shouting and waving. [...] Quickly Bilbo explained. They all fell silent: the hobbit standing by the grey stone, and the dwarves with wagging beards watching impatiently. The sun sank lower and lower, and their hopes fell. It sank into a belt of reddened cloud and disappeared. The dwarves groaned, but still Bilbo stood almost without moving. The little moon was dipping to the horizon. Evening was coming on. Then suddenly when their hope was lowest a red ray of the sun escaped like a finger through a rent in the cloud. A gleam of light came straight through the opening into the bay and fell on the smooth rock- face. The old thrush, who had been watching from a high perch with beady eyes and head cocked on one side, gave a sudden trill. There was a loud crack. A flake of rock split from the wall and fell. A hole appeared suddenly about three feet from the ground."

In this scene, Bilbo is just as depressed as everybody else. He sees no way out of the situation and is embittered by the fact that he is to lead them all, without any help from anyone. But when he sees the thrush, he just forgets about the fear and gloom, thinks, and acts - which is leaderly behavior.

Which sentence contains a dangling modifier? A.The angry matriarch could not break down the door carved from solid oak. B.Having
steposvetlana [31]

Answer:

Your answer would be D.

Explanation:

The sentence that contains a dangling modifier is D. A dangling modifier is a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence. In the sentence above, "preparing for the experiment" is a present participle expressing an action but does not name the doer of the action. In English sentences, the doer of the action must be the subject of the main sentence. However, the doer of the action is not "several slides" (the subject of the main clause). Slides do not have volition, so they can't prepare an experiment.

As the doer of the action is not clearly stated, the participle phrase is said to be dangling. Consequently, you should name the appropriate or logical doer of the action as the subject of the main clause. In this case, it could be an NP such as "the scientist" or you can turn the whole sentence into a when clause --> When the scientist was preparing the experiment, several slides...

Is there anything Standard about Standard Time?
Snowcat [4.5K]

Answer: Standard time is the synchronization of clocks within a geographical region to a single time standard, rather than a local mean time standard. Generally, standard time agrees with the local mean time at some meridian that passes through the region, often near the center of the region. Historically, standard time was established during the 19th century to aid weather forecasting and train travel. Applied globally in the 20th century, the geographical regions became time zones. The standard time in each time zone has come to be defined as an offset from Universal Time. A further offset is applied for part of the year in regions with daylight saving time.

The adoption of standard time, because of the inseparable correspondence between time and longitude, solidified the concept of halving the globe into an eastern and western hemisphere, with one prime meridian replacing the various prime meridians that had previously been used.

lora16 [44]
This passage allows us to see into the inner struggle and loneliness of the character. This is revealed in the phrase "interior gloom" while he faces the "open lattice" but he was not looking at anything at all. He was engrossed in his own thoughts and feelings of a closure or an ending of life implied in the phrase "the fire had smouldered to ashes." The surroundings was so silent and cold as revealed in the words "damp, mild air," "cloudy evening" and "so still."
