Three months after the storming of the Bastille, in October 1789, King Louis XVI had an extravagant feast for his new guards at Versailles. When the poor women of Paris heard about it, they gathered at the Paris City Hall to protest. They were starving. Flour was too expensive to buy, so they had no bread. When royal soldiers approached the women, they rioted at what they perceived as the king sending his soldiers to kill them. Thousands of women marched to Versailles to find the king and particularly the queen, Marie Antoinette, whom they saw as a loose and unfeeling woman.
