A marathon runner completes a 42.188-km course in 2 h , 40 min, and 13 s. There is an uncertainty of 29 m in the distance travel
ivanzaharov [21]

The missing part of the question is;

(a) Calculate the percent uncertainty in the distance.

(b) Calculate the percent uncertainty in the elapsed time.

(c) What is the average speed in meters per second?

(d) What is the uncertainty in the average speed?

Answer:

A) 0.0687%

B) 0.0312%

C) 4.389 m/s

D) 0.0044 m/s

Step-by-step explanation:

We are given;

Total Marathon distance = 42.188 km

Uncertain distance = 29m = 0.029 km

Time to complete marathon = 2 h , 40 min, and 13 s = 9613 seconds

Uncertain time = 3 seconds

A) % uncertainty in distance = (uncertain distance/total marathon distance) × 100% = (0.029/42.188) × 100% = 0.0687%

B)% uncertainty in the elapsed time = (elapsed time/total time) × 100% = (3/9613) × 100% = 0.0312%

C)average speed = total distance/total time

Total distance when converted to metres is 42188 m

Thus; average speed = 42188/9613 = 4.389 m/s

D) The percent uncertainty in the average speed is the combination of uncertainties of distance and time.

%uncertainty in speed = % uncertainty in distance + % uncertainty in the elapsed time

%uncertainty in speed = 0.0687% + 0.0312% = 0.0999%

Therefore, the uncertainty in the speed is;

δ_speed = 0.0999/100 × 4.389

δ_speed = 0.0044 m/s

Divide the following polynomials, then place
Alex777 [14]

Answer:

Two solutions were found :

x =(-2-√24)/2=-1-√ 6 = -3.449

x =(-2+√24)/2=-1+√ 6 = 1.449

Step-by-step explanation:

Step  1  :

Equation at the end of step 1 :

((3x2 +  7x) -  18) -  (x - 3)  = 0

Step  2  :

Step  3  :

Pulling out like terms :

3.1 Pull out like factors :

  3x2 + 6x - 15  =   3 • (x2 + 2x - 5)

Trying to factor by splitting the middle term

3.2     Factoring  x2 + 2x - 5

The first term is, x2 its coefficient is 1 .

The middle term is, +2x its coefficient is 2 .

The last term, "the constant", is -5

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant   1 • -5 = -5

Step-2 : Find two factors of -5 whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is 2 .

     -5    +    1    =    -4

     -1    +    5    =    4

Observation : No two such factors can be found !!

Conclusion : Trinomial can not be factored

Equation at the end of step 3 :

3 • (x2 + 2x - 5)  = 0

Step  4  :

Equations which are never true :

4.1      Solve :    3   =  0

This equation has no solution.

A a non-zero constant never equals zero.

Parabola, Finding the Vertex :

4.2      Find the Vertex of   y = x2+2x-5

Parabolas have a highest or a lowest point called the Vertex . Our parabola opens up and accordingly has a lowest point (AKA absolute minimum) . We know this even before plotting "y" because the coefficient of the first term, 1 , is positive (greater than zero).

Each parabola has a vertical line of symmetry that passes through its vertex. Because of this symmetry, the line of symmetry would, for example, pass through the midpoint of the two x -intercepts (roots or solutions) of the parabola. That is, if the parabola has indeed two real solutions.

Parabolas can model many real life situations, such as the height above ground, of an object thrown upward, after some period of time. The vertex of the parabola can provide us with information, such as the maximum height that object, thrown upwards, can reach. For this reason we want to be able to find the coordinates of the vertex.

For any parabola,Ax2+Bx+C,the x -coordinate of the vertex is given by -B/(2A) . In our case the x coordinate is -1.0000

Plugging into the parabola formula -1.0000 for x we can calculate the y -coordinate :

y = 1.0 * -1.00 * -1.00 + 2.0 * -1.00 - 5.0

or   y = -6.000

Parabola, Graphing Vertex and X-Intercepts :

Root plot for :  y = x2+2x-5

Axis of Symmetry (dashed)  {x}={-1.00}

Vertex at  {x,y} = {-1.00,-6.00}

x -Intercepts (Roots) :

Root 1 at  {x,y} = {-3.45, 0.00}

Root 2 at  {x,y} = { 1.45, 0.00}

Solve Quadratic Equation by Completing The Square

4.3     Solving   x2+2x-5 = 0 by Completing The Square .

Add 5 to both side of the equation :

  x2+2x = 5

Now the clever bit: Take the coefficient of x , which is 2 , divide by two, giving 1 , and finally square it giving 1

Add 1 to both sides of the equation :

On the right hand side we have :

  5  +  1    or,  (5/1)+(1/1)

The common denominator of the two fractions is 1 Adding (5/1)+(1/1) gives 6/1

So adding to both sides we finally get :

  x2+2x+1 = 6

Adding 1 has completed the left hand side into a perfect square :

  x2+2x+1  =

  (x+1) • (x+1)  =

(x+1)2

Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another. Since

  x2+2x+1 = 6 and

  x2+2x+1 = (x+1)2

then, according to the law of transitivity,

  (x+1)2 = 6

We'll refer to this Equation as Eq. #4.3.1

The Square Root Principle says that When two things are equal, their square roots are equal.

Note that the square root of

  (x+1)2   is

  (x+1)2/2 =

(x+1)1 =

  x+1

Now, applying the Square Root Principle to Eq. #4.3.1 we get:

  x+1 = √ 6

Subtract 1 from both sides to obtain:

  x = -1 + √ 6

Since a square root has two values, one positive and the other negative

  x2 + 2x - 5 = 0

  has two solutions:

x = -1 + √ 6

  or

x = -1 - √ 6

Solve Quadratic Equation using the Quadratic Formula

4.4     Solving    x2+2x-5 = 0 by the Quadratic Formula .

According to the Quadratic Formula, x , the solution for Ax2+Bx+C = 0 , where A, B and C are numbers, often called coefficients, is given by :

           - B  ±  √ B2-4AC

x =   ————————

                     2A

In our case,  A   =     1

                     B   =    2

                     C   =   -5

Accordingly,  B2  -  4AC   =

                    4 - (-20) =

                    24

Applying the quadratic formula :

              -2 ± √ 24

  x  =    —————

                   2

Can  √ 24 be simplified ?

Yes! The prime factorization of 24 is

  2•2•2•3

To be able to remove something from under the radical, there have to be 2 instances of it (because we are taking a square i.e. second root).

√ 24   =  √ 2•2•2•3   =

               ±  2 • √ 6

√ 6   , rounded to 4 decimal digits, is   2.4495

So now we are looking at:

          x  =  ( -2 ± 2 •  2.449 ) / 2

Two real solutions:

x =(-2+√24)/2=-1+√ 6 = 1.449

or:

x =(-2-√24)/2=-1-√ 6 = -3.449

Two solutions were found :

x =(-2-√24)/2=-1-√ 6 = -3.449

x =(-2+√24)/2=-1+√ 6 = 1.449

The Northwest High School senior class decided to host a raffle to raise money for their senior trip. They charged $2 for each s
prisoha [69]
Let x be the tickets that the adults bought, andy be the tickets that children bought.
From the problem we have the system of linear equations:
\left \{ {{2x+5y=2686} \atop {y=3x}} \right.

The first thing we are going to do to solve our system, is replacing equation (2) in equation (1), and then, solve for x
2x+5y=2686
2x+5(3x)=2686
2x+15x=2686
17x=2686
x= \frac{2686}{17}
x=158

Now that we have the number of tickets that the adults bought, lets replace that value in equation (2):
y=3x
y=3(158)
y=474

Last but not least, to find the total number of tickets, we are going to add x and y:
158+474=632

We can conclude that Northwest High School's senior class sold 632 raffle tickets.
