According to George Orwell, doublespeak is replacing individually chosen words as the basic unit of modern English. It is a language that purposely complicates, cloaks, deceives or reverse the true meaning of words. It is also nearly identified with political language.
While George Orwell himself did not coin the term, doublespeak is inspired from his book "1984". Doublespeak refers to the act of purposefully making speech sound ambiguous or embellishing the truth to make it more palatable. In both cases, the goal of the speaker is to disguise the truth without being outright liable for lying. This is often associated with political language, since it often prioritizes the support of the people rather than communicating the truth. Euphemisms are very often used in doublespeak since they serve as a way to "soften" the impact. For example, think of a politician communicating the results of a drone attack on another city. Words like "casualties" are often used to replace "deaths", "civilians" is used to replace "people", and so on. This way speech dehumanizes the situation, making it easier to accept and support.
