1. In literature, an episode is one section or part of an overarching story.

2. Each subclimax is followed by falling action, which is actually the rising action to the next climax. One wave after another rolls in (rising action), crests (climax), and then suddenly fades away (falling action).

3. Deciding point of view, or who is telling the story, is an extremely important part of creating a story, because it determines how much the author reveals to the reader.

4. The concept of natural selection is part of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The idea is that animals with characteristics most suited to their environment survive and pass on their genes, which leads to improvements in the species.

5. Will to power is a belief that there are only leaders and followers, and that you have to be ruthless and merciless to be a leader. If you show the slightest weakness, others will notice and attack you. Only the strongest can seize and maintain power.

6. This chapter deals with Buck’s move from civilization, where he lives a pampered life, to a more primitive state, as he heads the the wild.

7. Because they are longer than short stories, novels have more room to develop multiple themes and conflicts and to explore these in depth among more characters and situations.
