I think Bruno regret saying those to Ishmael because he didn't see the reality of between the Jews and Germans. He regrets saying those words because he saw how the Jews were treated even in his household. Jews were beaten and considered inferior compared to Germans.
The extended metaphor is life can be related to someone that sells people something, and that life sells beauty. I can conclude this because in the poem, many things which are considered beautiful are up for sale.
