Explanation:

Esquivel's family taught her that the corn was sacred, it represented fertility, so she should not step on the corn kernels. While she was a child, she did not really step on it, but by the time she reached adulthood she understood that it was a myth and there was no problem stepping on the corn kernels. However, she tells the same myth to her daughter and tells the little girl not to step on the corn kernels. Esquivel does this to maintain the cultural traditions of the family.
