The 1950s were pivotal for the American automobile industry. The post-World War II era brought a wide range of new technologies to the automobile consumer, and a host of problems for the independent automobile manufacturers. The industry was maturing in an era of rapid technological change; mass production and the benefits from economies of scale led to innovative designs and greater profits, but stiff competition between the automakers. By the end of the decade, the industry had reshaped itself into the Big Three, Studebaker, and AMC. The age of small independent automakers was nearly over, as most of them either consolidated or went out of business.
A number of innovations were either invented or improved sufficiently to allow for mass production during the decade: air conditioning, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, seat belts and arguably the most influential change in automotive history, the overhead-valve V8 engine. The horsepower race had begun, laying the foundation for the muscle car era.
After World War II, much of Europe was devastated and needed to be rebuilt. However the countries had no money because they spent it all during the war. No taxes could be collected because the people were poor and had hardly anything to eat. The United States at this time was the richest nation in the world. Although Russia was an ally during the war against Germany, the relationship changed after the war and it was feared that unless Western Europe rise quickly again, it would fall into communist hands. The United States came up with the Marshall Plan and offered to help the European countries to recover from the effects of the war. Russia and its allies turned down the offer of assistance. The Marshall plan was a success and all the countries who accepted help recovered.

Dred vs Scott-This case was about a man living in Illinois (a free state) with a slave (Dred Scott). When Dred Scott's owner died he became a free man, however Sanford's brother in law said otherwise. The laws said that he could be free, but others said that he was still a slave and that because of that he can't be a free man.
Us vs Reese-declared that the 15th amendment did not automatically protect the right of African Americans to vote (only listed the ways that states were not allowed to prevent them from voting)
Minor vs Happersett-presented herself at the polls in St. Louis in 1872 and when the registrar refused to permit her to vote, she and her husband sued him for denying her one of the "privileges and immunities of citizenship"; when they lost the case they appealed to the Supreme Court
