Roosevelt mediated the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), for which he won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.This term was coined by United States President Theodore Roosevelt, who referred to his office as a "bully pulpit", by which he meant a terrific platform from which to advocate an agenda. Roosevelt used the word bully as an adjective meaning "superb" or "wonderful", a more common usage at that time.He remains the youngest person to become President of the United States. Roosevelt was a leader of the progressive movement, and he championed his "Square Deal" domestic policies, promising the average citizen fairness, breaking of trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs.

Unsafe and unsanitary work places lead to work-related sickness and fatalities.

In addition, there were long working hours 6 days a week with unpaid overtime hours.  There are also workers exposed to extreme weather.

Labor strikes forced a change in the industry. The International Ladies Garment Workers Union attempted to advocate against poor working conditions. The Fair labor Standards responded by setting minimum wage and overtime pay.
