What effect did spending time with the lotus-eaters have on odysseus's men?

As time went on and they stayed with the lotus-eaters, they fed them lotus-flowers which manipulated Odysseus's men and they became prisoners unknowingly. It was as if they were under a trance. The only way they could leave is if they stopped eating the lotus-flowers but they became an addiction.
