I think that Mrs. Auld followed her husband's advice to stop teaching Douglass to read in My Bondage and My Freedom because WIVES WERE EXPECTED TO OBEY THEIR HUSBANDS.
Douglass was a slave and according to Mr. Auld, slaves do not need to know how to read because they will not be able to perform their tasks well as a slave.
They ruled unanimously that there is a meaningful distinction between punishing the content of speech and using speech as evidence of motive in a crime. (Unanimously- agreed to by all)
