The town responds to Mrs.Hutchinsons lateness pleasantly.

When she was late she was standing next to Mrs. Delcroix, and when she told that she had forgotten the date, they both softly laughed.

When she met her husband, Mr.Summers, he cheerfully said “Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”  Thus, even though she was late, she was greeted pleasantly and cheerfully.
