American Revolution divided them into the loyalists and the patriots.

The patriots represented the part of the people who wanted to gain independence from Britain and have their own country called the United States.

The loyalists were people who lived in American colonies, but did not want to brake away from Britain. They had many reasons for it, like fear from British army, importance of trading business with England.
