A participle phrase begins with a present or past participle. In this case, it starts with the past participle <em>armed with their bats, balls, and mitts. </em>Since all phrases require two or more words, a participle phrase will often include objects and/or modifiers that complete the thought (the PP <em>with their bats, balls, and mitts</em>). What is more, they always function as adjectives, adding description to the sentence. In this case, the past participle modifies the NP <em>the team.</em>
