The reason why the Germans had great early success was the same in both wars - they were pioneering the tactics, equipment and soldier training in the beginning which lead to them winning the early battles. This shifted over time when other nations also gained new knowledge on how to wage battle.

The Cold War was caused by the military expansionism of Stalin and his successors. The American response… was basically a defensive reaction. As long as Soviet leaders clung to their dream of imposing Communism on the world, the West had no way (other than surrender) of ending the conflict.
