Nunavut is the newest Canadian territory that was established on April 1 1999 when it separated from the Northwest Territories (NWT)
Comprising of the central and eastern parts of the former NWT, the creation of Nunavut was the outcome of the largest aboriginal land claims agreement between the Canadian government and the native Inuit people.
