a² -2a -8 = 0
Move the non-x term to the right
a² -2a = 8
Divide equation by coefficient of a^2 (not necessary).
Take the coefficient of x (which is -2)
divide it by 2
square it
add it to both sides of the equation
-2 / 2 = -1
-1 ^2 = 1

a² -2a +1= 8 +1

(a -1) * (a-1) = 9

Take the square root of both sides

(a-1) = 3
a = 4

Remember that square root of 9 ALSO = -3
(a-1) = -3
a = -2

Answer:

B(-7, -3) C(3, -3) D(3, -1) E(-7, -1)

Step-by-step explanation:

*I am just labeling the points*

B(-7, 5) C(3, 5) D(3, 7) E(-7, 7)

If we were to translate the points 8 units down, we would only need to subtract the y-intercept for every point by 8. (Except don’t include any tenth places)

B(-7, -3) C(3, -3) D(3, -1) E(-7, -1)

A rectangle has an area of 36 inches squared. Write an equation to show how the length (l) varies inversely the width (w).
Anastaziya [24]
Start with the first sentence, and the definition of the area of a rectangle:
l * w = 36

Rewrite the equation to get
l = 36 / w
or
w = 36 / l
Either one shows the inverse relationship between w and l.

Assuming the last part wants you to write an equation for an x-y graph, the equation would be
y = 36 / x

The height of the Eiffel Tower is 1050 feet. From the top, the angle of depression to a soccer ball on the ground is 20 degrees.
mihalych1998 [28]
Since the angle of depression from the Eiffel tower is congruent to the angle of elevation from the soccer ball, the angle of elevation from the soccer field is 20°

Now, we can use the trigonometric function tangent to find the distance from the soccer ball to the base of the Eiffel Tower:
tan( \alpha )= \frac{opposite.side}{adjacent.side}
tan(20)= \frac{1050}{a}
a= \frac{1050}{tan(20)}
a=2884.85

We can conclude that the distance from the soccer ball to the base of the Eiffel Tower is 2884.85 feet.
