A map of Africa today is shown; the sub-Sahara region, not including South Africa, is where the European slave traders were active. The Portuguese began dealing in black slaves from Africa in the 15th century. Initially, they purchased slaves from Islamic traders, who had established inland trading routes to the sub-Sahara region. Later, as the Portuguese explored the coast of Africa, they came upon the Senegal River, and found that they could purchase slaves directly from black Africans. The European slave trading activity moved south along the African coast over time, as far south as Angola. On the east coast of Africa and in the Indian Ocean region, slaves were also taken from Mozambique, Zanzibar and Madagascar. Many of the slaves were from the interior of Africa, having been taken captive as a result of tribal wars, or else having been kidnapped by black slave traders engaged in the business of trading slaves for European goods. These slaves would be marched to the coast to be sold, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles. Many perished along the way - the numbers can only be estimated. Lovejoy (20) notes that losses on the ships were estimated at 9-15 per cent, and losses at Dutch-ruled Cape Coast castle were reported to be 6-7 per cent. Losses from the point of capture to the point of arrival at the slave trading forts were estimated to be 40% by Miller (21) based on data from Angola. Using Thomas' (12) figure of 11,128,000 live slaves delivered to the New World during the Atlantic slave trade, and considering Lovejoy's and Miller's estimates of losses, the number of captured slaves in the interior of Africa is estimated to be from 21.7 million to 23.5 million people. This figure does not include the many who may have been killed in the process of capture.

Why was FGM successful in Ethiopia?
dedylja [7]

Answer:

In countries like Ethiopia, where sexual education is not very well implemented in the life of people things like FGM happen. This procedure is very dangerous and it is done at the girl’s very young age. The reason why this method of damaging girls still exists is a gender stereotype.

Explanation:

In Ethiopia is still men’s world, women and their rights are not so respected. People in Ethiopia consider that doing this procedure, a girl will be saved from diseases and genital infections.

But, behind all of these false reasons, there is one principle. Respecting the tradition. This way, women will stay virgins, they will avoid shame and their sexual desire will be lessened as the procedure is very painful and can leave serious consequences on women. The people in Ethiopia believe that a girl is more respected and traditionally accepted if her virginity is kept.

What factor was the biggest contributor to the birth of sectionalism in the country?
Flura [38]
During the early nineteenth century, sectional tensions mounted. New Englanders expressed increasing anxiety over the growing prominence of the western states and the policies of the Jefferson and Madison administrations regarding the Napoleonic conflict in Europe. Slow population growth owing to westward migration and an insecure economy dependent on international trade left New England vulnerable. In a pattern evident in future decades, perceptions of declining fortunes exacerbated sectionalism. Throughout American history, sectionalism seemed most significant in those sections that felt threatened, exploited, or oppressed. Sectionalism in the United States was primarily a defensive rather than an offensive stance. It was a raw nerve in the American identity; when irritated, it was felt sharply.

Use the drop-down menus to complete the sentences. An author's describes the author's perspective or relationship to the materia
Sonja [21]

Answer:

An author's point of view describes the author's perspective or relationship to the material.

An author's purpose tells why he or she created the source.

Identifying an author's point of view and purpose can help a historian determine whether a source is credible.

Explanation:

An author's point of view refers to the perspective that an author has on the world or on the subject that he is discussing. This is usually influenced by the author's background and his experiences in life. On the other hand, the author's purpose refers to the reason or motivation why the author writes a particular text. When historians analyze a text in order to use it as a source, they look at both the point of view and the purpose of the author. These two elements can help the historian ascertain whether the source is to be trusted or not.
