In "Night," by Elie Wiesel, after being separated from her husband, Mrs. Schächter screams and cries like mad in desperation. Her state is so frantic that she also claims to see fire. As a consequence, she alters the emotional condition of the rest of the prisoners, who assault her physically in a brutal manner to make her quiet.

Right before his longer speech, the Friar says "Myself condemned and myself excused." He is telling everyone the whole story of  how it all happened, but his motivation is a bit conflicted. He knows that telling them everything will possibly get him into trouble, as he did all of  it without anyone's permission, but also he thinks that being honest will free him from any punishment.
