phones and music players” their parents had as children (McDonnel).

For some of the sentences, the author is quoting what the original author is saying in quotation marks. They also show something like (Peterson, 98) to tell where they got the information from.
The first step is to read and identify important words/phrases in the story. Identify first the small and important details then you can see which ones are more important for the summary.
