Answer:

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that explains how seven continents are formed. Around 240 million years ago, all these continents were together in the form of a super-continent (called as pangaea). However, due to convection (circular motion of molten material inside Earth) and gravity, supercontinent started breaking apart. These parts started moving away from each other leading to the continental drift.
