With all of the borrowed money, she had finally bought the new necklace and "returned" it to her friend. Little did she know that the necklace she borrowed was fake.
So for 10 years she spent cleaning and working so hard trying to pay back all these people thinking the necklace she lost was real. Throughout these 10 years, she more or less entered a state of depression and ultimate exhaustion realizing she had wasted so much of her life.
