How were the few Christian defenders of Jerusalem able to get Saladin to agree to spare the lives of the Christians in the City?
kotykmax [81]

Is there a Christian neighboorhood in Jerusalem?

Yes. There is a historic Christian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem. Otherwise there is no specific area for Christians, but they can live all areas. There are also Arab villages that are primarilly christian Arabs in the greater Jerusalem metropolitan area

Why is Jerusalem special to christians?

It's special for a lot of the same reasons that it is for Jews and perhaps a few more as well. David, Israel's second and greatest king captured it around 1000BC and the Jews held it till about 586BC when it was largely destroyed by the Babylonians. Solomon, David's son and successor, built a temple for God there and God was said to dwell there. Jews everywhere would come to worship God there. This temple was destroyed by the Babylonians but was rebuilt by Herod the Great (although it had already been partially rebuilt a few centuries earlier) and was destroyed again by the Romans in 70AD. For Christians, however, Jerusalem's significance is also found in the fact that Jesus was crucified and rose again there. Some Christians also believe, like some Jews, that the end of the world will focus on Jerusalem and that Jesus will return there. However, not all Christians agree with this and instead see the significance of Jerusalem as being purely historical.

Why is Jerusalem so important to Christians?

Jerusalem is of interest to many Christians because it is the place where some key events in Jesus' life occurred. The most important among these are the events leading up to and including the crucifixion such as the Betrayal at Gethsemane, the Pardoning of Barabbas, the Via Dolorosa, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. It is also a place that will have significance in the future as it a likely place for the Second Coming to begin. It has always been of significance to God and to the Jews and as such is important to Christians. As many people like to visit and see for themselves places where people important to them have lived, so is Jerusalem to Christians. It is interesting to see and learn about a city of which you read so much. It isn't the main event, though for Christians and there are no requirements to make a pilgrimage there. It is the place where Christianity began at Pentecost and it is at Antioch where the term 'Christian' was first applied. It is where Jesus was crucified.

Why do Christian go to Jerusalem?

Well, because that's where our Savior was born, baptized, crucified, and raised from the dead. That's really where it all began, when we was sat FREE from the hands of the enemy!

Why do Jews Christians and Muslims believe that Jerusalem is their holy city?

None of these religions purports that it is exclusively "their holy city", i.e. its mine and no-one else's, although the Islamic Waqf of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Haram Al-Sharif routinely tries to discredit the Jewish connection of the city in order to buttress Palestinian claims. (The Waqf somehow avoids the problem of Christianity holding the city as holy, though.) Jews acknowledge Christian and Muslim reverence of the city and this is most clearly noted by the permission given by Israel for Muslims and Christians to visit and regulate their holy places in the Old City. Christians acknowledge the Jewish history of Jerusalem since it undergirds Jesus' activities in the Holy Land. Christians do not actively recognize the Muslim holiness of the place, but have not attempted to refute it either. Proper Muslims acknowledge both the Jewish and Christian reverence of the city since King David, King Solomon, and Jesus are all Islamic Prophets. To find out what particular parts of Jerusalem each finds holy, please see the Related Question.

What is the significance of Jerusalem for Jews and Christians?

because jerusalem is the holy land or the land promised to the jewsby God it hold value to the jews and christianity came from judaismtherefor it become valued by the christians Answer 2 Jerusalem is the center of Judaism. It is important to Jews becauseit was chosen by God (Zechariah 3:2). It was the site of theAkeidah (Binding of Isaac, in Genesis ch.22) and was later the seatof the Davidic Kings, when King David, Israel's greatest king, founded the dynasty that ruled Judah for much of its history, making Jerusalem the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel duringhis reign and that of his son, King Solomon. Most importantly, it was the location of the First and SecondTemples, where offerings were made to God and where His presencedwelt in the Holy of Holies (1 Kings ch.8).
