Scout found it strange that she was required to dress up to go to First Purchase Church, and that she and Jem were the only white people there. Scout would also have been surprised by the way songs were sung at this church, and by the fact that the pursuit of money for the collection bowl was somewhat aggressive. Last, the experience surprises Scout because she realizes that Calpurnia is different when she is away from the Finch household.
