He began his career at Eclectic Institute as a professor of ancient languages upon graduation from Williams College. In 1857, at age 25, he became the school’s president.

On July 2, 1881, Garfield was assassinated in the railroad station in Washington, D.C., by Charles J. Guiteau, a mental office seeker who had messianic visions. The first shot grazed Garfield’s arm, but the second bullet pierced his back and lodged behind his pancreas. Guiteau willingly surrendered to police, while announcing, “I am a Stalwart'.
