In "No Gumption" the main idea was to for Buddy to try and get a job. He was telling you how hard it was for him and his family during The Great Depression and he needed a job so that he could be able to provide food and other stuff for his family. Because with his father dead he needed to be the man of the house. He had a lot to learn and it wasn't easy. This was a bad time for this. He soon got a job with the newspaper. He knew then that he wanted to be a writer. I hope this helps.
